We decided to do a post to show you what is in a basic bicycle tool kit. What basic tools should you have in your toolkit?
There are a lot of tools that are specifically for bicycles only. Other tools can be acquired from auto shops or hardware stores.
We decided that instead of purchasing each individual tool, we would purchase an entire tool kit. It would have cost a lot more to buy the tools individually.
This type of kit can be purchased for less than $100. This style of toolkit will get you started and contains tools for most basic maintenance jobs on a bicycle.
This toolkit contains the following:
- Pedal Spanner x 1 – 15 / 24mm.
- Cone Spanner x 2 – 13 / 14 / 15 / 16mm.
- Crank Puller x 1.
- Tyre Lever x 3.
- Bottom Bracket Tool x 1 (for loose cup and bearing).
- Multi-Size Spoke Nipple Key.0.139/0.136/0.127/3.2/3.3/3.5mm
- Allen Keys 10/8.0/6.0/5.0/4.0/3.0/2.5/2.0mm x 1.
- ”L” shaped interchangeable Multi Tool with 2 x Flat Head, 2 x Phillips Head, 2 x hex head Screwdriver attachments (different sizes) and 1 x 8mm, 9mm and 10mm sockets.
- Chain Whip for cogs / clusters x 1.
- 8mm and 10mm Spanner x 1.
- Head Fitting Tool with 30mm, 32mm, 36mm and 40mm.
- Puncture Repair Kit x 1.
- Chain Breaking Tool x 1.
- Cluster Remover x 1.
- Splined Bottom Bracket Tool for sealed bottom brackets x 1.
The toolkit comes in a hard plastic carry case. Nearly all the tools are metal except for the tyre levers. They are made of a hard plastic.
All the tools would be great to take on a ride with you, but you really only want to take the tools that fit to your bike and tools that could be used for temporary repairs.
The cluster removal tool in this kit fits Shimano, SRAM, Sun Race, Sun tour, Chris King and many other rear clusters. It also fits Shimano disc brake lockrings.
