Getting Started – Helmets

The law in Western Australia states that a helmet must be worn when riding a bicycle. This applies to all sorts of bicycles except for exercise bikes inside your house. In this article we will be taking a look at bicycle helmets, so you know what one looks like.

A typical bicycle helmet has a polystyrene inner with a colored outer plastic. The helmet is extremely lightweight and has vents in the top to allow your head to remain cool. They are fitted with adjustable straps that clip together under your chin.

Some bicycle helmets come with a clip on sun visor to give your face some protection from the sun. Other types of helmets also have a more aerodynamic design and extra venting at the rear. Some even have fittings on the rear for tail lights, and may come with a small blinking red led light.

The inside of a typical bicycle helmet is made of polystyrene foam. Most helmets come in standard sizes and have velcro padded inserts of varying thicknesses to get the fit right for your head. To get a perfect fit on your head, you remove the inserts that are around the edges and replace them with the provided inserts that are different thicknesses.

It is a good idea when buying a helmet to try it on at the store, and keep in mind that if you wear a cap under you helmet, you will have to account for the extra room.

In hot weather it is a good idea to buy a helmet with plenty of cooling vents. In case you were wondering what to do in rain, here is a tip. Buy some shower caps and either wear one on the outside of your helmet or under your helmet.
