Heading South on the Freeway Cycle Path

If starting at Perth Central Train Station, you need to get onto the North side of the station to find the path and follow it west. There may be several detours in place because of construction work. The path should go up over a bridge near the Old Entertainment Centre, (which may be demolished). You need to turn right on the centre of the bridge, and go down the ramp heading west. Following it along you will come to a point where there is a retaining wall on the right of the path, and the railway line also on the right. On the left on the other side of the road as you pass under the freeway bridge, you will see a multi story car park with a "Harbour Town" sign. Just before that you will see the cycleway.

The route out of Perth.

This is where you turn left. The path straight on goes to Subiaco.

This is where you turn left. The path straight on goes to Subiaco.

Be careful crossing the road. The path then takes you up to Wellington Street. On the right as you approach you will see the R.A.C.W.A. building. You need to cross Wellington street, ride up the cycle path to Murray street, cross over, and go up the really steep part to Hay Street. Once again go straight ahead onto the island, and turn right. Using the bicycles/pedestrian light, cross the left hand turn lane from the freeway and ride up the hill about 20 feet on the path, and turn left when you see the path continue to the left. It's almost like executing a U turn here. Swing wide if you have a BOB trailer attached.

This is a good down hill run. On the right you will see Parliament House just before you go through a short tunnel. Exercise caution here as pedestrians may be descending the stairways or exiting from a side path.

After exiting the tunnel, continue down the hill across the bridge and take the next left path. This will take you to a tunnel which you proceed through and turn left. You are now on the path that will take you to the end of the freeway. Following the path, it will take you up and over the Narrows Bridge, crossing the Swan River. Crossing the narrows bridge heading South, you need to be on the right hand side of the bridge, which this path uses. If coming from another direction, you will need to negotiate crossing the road underneath the bridge.

If you are riding along the cycle path from the Bell Tower, in the above picture you will be coming from the direction marked A. If you continue on, you will end up on path B, which goes past the old Swan Brewery. So if coming from the Bell Tower (Direction A), just before you reach the Narrows Bridge, you will see a road crossing on the right. If coming from the path from the old Swan Brewery (Path B), go under the Narrows Bridge and turn left. In both cases, once you have crossed the road, turn left, and follow the path around to the right. It will take you to a T junction. Turn right and continue up and over the Narrows Bridge crossing the Swan River.

If you are riding along the South Perth foreshore, which is Direction C in the above photograph, the path will curve to the left shortly before reaching the bridge. It will come to a road. Cross the road and turn right and follow the path under the bridge. You then need to cross the off ramps from the freeway on the path (C in the image below), and then turn left towards the toilet block. The path will join the freeway cycle path.

In the above image, those that started from the Perth Rail Station, or joined from direction A or B, will come down the ramp, marked as AB. The toilet block is marked as T in the above image. There is a water fountain on the west (river) side of the toilet block in case you need water and the toilet block is locked. The path (D in above image) then continues on towards Como and the Canning Bridge.
