Heading North East out of the Perth Metropolitan Area
This cycle path will eventually link Perth to Midland. At this stage the path is only continous to Bayswater Railway station. It is then possible to get to Ashfield and Bassendean via back streets. There are pieces of the path in place further along. At this stage this guide only goes to the Tonkin Highway Bridge in Ashfield because that is as far as the path goes, and its also a good place to exit to the airports. Photographs will be added in later.
Starting at Perth Railway station, you need to be on the north side of the station and follow the cycle path east along Roe Street, up the incline to the intersection of Roe Street and Beaufort Streets. Use the pedestrian crossing to cross to the dual use path on the other side. Follow it along and as the path curves to the left, you will see the path turn off to the right.
The NE route out of Perth. Zoom in for further details.
Take the right turn, and follow the path around to where it comes to a road. Cross the road, and you can only turn left, then take the first turn right immediately, then left turn and cross the road before the railway crossing. This route so far is all sign posted and the path's road crossing near the railway crossing is clearly marked.
We are on the path now which basically follows the railway line. You will pass McIver Railway station on the right. The path will follow the railway line to the right and then eventually head up a steep ramp. This is Claisebrook Railway Station. Once the path reaches the top of the bridge, turn left and go to the end and down the ramp. Be careful coming off of the ramp, as there may be cyclists on the dual use path on the left.
You will shortly come to a tunnel which the path goes through. Just before the tunnel is an intersection, with a path on the left. Take this turning left, and that is it. Following this path will take you all the way to Bayswater Railway Station. There is only one road crossing so it's a good ride, with a few uphills and downhills.
Once you reach Bayswater Railway Station, the path will bend right and end. You will exit into the car park. Continue through the carpark or across it to the road and turn left. This is Whatley Crescent and is a reasonably quiet road. Follow it along up and down the hills. It follows the railway line which you can still see on your left. The road will eventually come to a sharp right. Ahead, you will see Guildford Road. As the road bends right, the cycle path continues on the left. It doesn't go far. It only takes you under the Tonkin Highway bridge. As you exit from under the bridge, the path continues up to the road that crosses the railway line.
Shortly before the end, if you look to the right you will see a petrol station. This is a 24 hour petrol station. It is on the corner of Guildford Road and Katanning Street. Taking this route will get you to the Domestic Airport and the International Airport.
You want to continue?
To continue on, instead of riding on busy Guildford Road, take a left and cross the railway line, and turn right. This is Railway Parade and a lot quieter and wider than Guildford Road. This road continues until it reaches an intersection with Collier Road.
Cross Collier Road and you will see a path that takes you onto a dead end street. This is Railway Parade, and you can follow it past Bassendean Railway Station. The dead end part terminates and you need to veer right and continue following the railway line. This is a back street and is quite narrow. It continues up to an intersection with Lord Street.
You need to cross this road which can be quite busy. Once on the footpath on the other side, you will see a path going down to a road. Follow this down, keeping an eye out on the right for a dual use path. Once you see the path, veer right onto it and head down the steep part towards the river and then turning right towards the road bridge which crosses the Swan River. Just before the Bridge there is steep path taking you up onto the path that crosses the bridge. Cross the river and continue following the path.
We are going to head North, if going east, that's it for now.
Before you get to Guildford Railway Station, you will see a path crossing the railway line into a carpark. Turn left onto this path, and once you have crossed the carpark, turn right onto the street which is Victoria Street. Follow this until it's end.
Straight ahead you will see a park, with a rotunda, which is a good place to stop for a break. Otherwise turn left into Johnson Street and follow it as it bends around to the right and comes to a roundabout. The road on the right is Meadow Street and the one on the left is West Swan Road, which will take you North.
As you approach this roundabout, get onto the footpath and turn left into West Swan Road. The reason for this is that the road is quite narrow on the bridge as it crosses the river. The footpath becomes a decent path and takes you safely across the bridge.
You can follow West Swan Road until it's end, where it joins the Great Northern Highway. This road is not too busy compared to the Great Northern Highway coming out of Midland and there are parts of cycle ways along the road that make it safe to ride on.
Continuing up Great Northern Highway on the shoulder, you can ride until Warbrook Road and then ride across to the much quieter Railway parade and continue to Muchea in peace.
